Drainville comments upset the Jewish community
MONTREAL — Quebec’s Jewish community says it is outraged and saddened by comments from Bernard Drainville, Parti Québécois Minister of Democratic Institutions, about Montreal’s “privileged treatment” for parking during religious holidays. University St. re-opens after serious accident
MONTREAL — A man in his 70s was rushed to a hospital with head injuries after he drove the wrong way on University St. and hit two cars. University is closed above Sherbrooke St. while police investigate and clean up. The accident happened just before noon below Pine Ave. The man turned south down University, which is a one-way north-only route. The driver struck two cars going up the hill. He and his passenger were the only ones injured in the collisions and both were taken to hospital. [read more]
Two men arrested on child sexual exploitation charges
MONTREAL — Officers with the Sûréte du Québec arrested two men on Thursday on charges of possession of child pornography and luring a minor over the Internet. The two cases are not linked. Armed with a search warrant, they went to the home of a 29-year-old man in Plessisville. This man had been singled out by the SQ’s sexual exploitation of children unit for allegedly texting and chatting in a sexual manner with a 13-year-old. The man will appear before a judge in Victoriaville on Friday on charges of luring, initiating sexual contact, production of child pornography and possession of illegal drugs. [read more]
78-year-old Laval man missing
MONTREAL — Laval police are asking for help from the public in locating a 78-year-old man who disappeared on Thursday. Antonio Zazzara, who only speaks Italian, went for a walk from his Laval-des-Rapides home at 10 a.m. Thursday and never returned. His family is very concerned because Zazzara gets easily confused. The missing man is 5 foot 5 inches tall, weighs 154 pounds, is bald, has green eyes, and was last seen wearing a grey coat, black pants and a black cap. He walks slowly. MONTREAL — Natural Resources Canada has reported a magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Braeside, Ont. Braeside is on the Ottawa River, near the Quebec border and about 70 kilometres from Ottawa. [read more]

Laval standoff ends with man tasered
MONTREAL — Police in Laval tasered a man wanted for questioning in a domestic-violence complaint about 10 a.m. Friday, after a standoff of about seven hours around a residence in Laval’s Fabreville district, The man had sought refuge, apparently inside his mother’s home, after he refused to cooperate with officers trying to question him.
